Building a Career in Tech: A 5-Day Web Design Training Experience with the Association of Brothers Abroad Nobility (ABAN)
When the world came to a standstill during the COVID-19 lockdown, it also presented a unique opportunity — a time for reflection, skill acquisition, and preparation for the future of work. Recognizing this, the
Association of Brothers Abroad Nobility (ABAN) took a bold step to empower its members by investing in their professional growth.
We invited
Lu Abikoye, a seasoned tech professional and career coach, to lead an enlightening session on "
Building a Career in Tech and Leveraging Remote Job Opportunities." The goal was simple but profound: to equip members with the knowledge and practical skills needed to transition into technology careers, especially at a time when remote work was becoming the new normal.
A Vision Turned into Action: The 5-Day Intensive Web Design Training
After the inspiring career talk, it was clear that interest in tech had been ignited. To build on the momentum, ABAN organized a
5-day intensive Web Design training specifically for their members. This training was carefully crafted to not just teach theory, but to provide hands-on experience that could immediately be applied in the real world.
Each day of the program was thoughtfully structured:
Day 1: Introduction to Web Design and Tools of the Trade
Members were introduced to the basics of web design, including an overview of how websites work, essential tools, and the importance of user-centered design.
Day 2: HTML and CSS Fundamentals
Participants rolled up their sleeves and got practical with HTML and CSS, the building blocks of the web.
Day 3: Designing Responsive Websites
Understanding that modern users access websites from multiple devices, the focus was on creating mobile-friendly and responsive designs.
Day 4: Introduction to WordPress and No-Code Tools
To broaden career options, attendees explored WordPress — a powerful platform that powers a large portion of the internet — and no-code website builders.
Day 5: Career Pathways in Web Development and Project Showcase
The final day featured a discussion on different career paths in web development, from Frontend Developer to WordPress Specialist, followed by a project showcase where participants presented websites they had built during the training. We
Preparing for a Remote-First Future
One of the key themes throughout the training was the incredible opportunity that remote jobs offer. In a world that increasingly embraces remote work, web design and development skills open doors to freelance gigs, startup opportunities, and full-time remote roles with companies around the globe.
Lu Abikoye emphasized building a strong portfolio, continuous learning, and the power of networking — practical tips that continue to guide participants on their tech journey.
A Step in the Right Direction
The initiative by the Association of Brothers Abroad Nobility reflects a forward-thinking approach: investing in the skills of their members to ensure they are not left behind in the digital economy.
Today, many participants have gone on to pursue careers in tech, some working remotely for international clients, and others building their own web design businesses.
The COVID-19 pandemic may have isolated people physically, but it also sparked a movement of growth and transformation. Thanks to efforts like ABAN’s 5-Day Web Design Training, the future looks bright for those ready to embrace it.
